What is a time zone and how does it work?

A time zone is the division of the planet into regions that share the same official time. Because the Earth takes 24 hours to make a full rotation, it was split into 24 main time zones, each one hour apart from its neighbor. The reference point is the Greenwich Meridian (GMT/UTC+0), located in the United Kingdom.

UTC, GMT and daylight saving time

When you see "UTC-5", it means the local time is 5 hours behind Greenwich — that's the US East Coast (New York, Washington). "UTC+9" means 9 hours ahead, as in Japan and South Korea. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is practically equivalent to UTC for everyday use.

Daylight saving time is adopted by many countries to make better use of sunlight: clocks move forward 1 hour in summer and back in winter. This temporarily changes the time difference between countries that observe it and those that don't.

What is a world clock for?

A world clock is essential for anyone working with international teams, scheduling meetings across countries, with family or friends abroad, traveling frequently or following live events in other zones. Knowing it's 9 a.m. in New York means it's 2 p.m. in London, 5 p.m. in Dubai and 10 p.m. in Tokyo — crucial information for any global communication.
